A message from Jennifer Chastain (co-host of the Kim Pagano Show):
As many of you know, I am part of Rolling For Pink (RFP), the grassroots non-profit located in Camarillo. RFP raises money for The Breast Cancer Research Foundation and we have raised over $200,000 to date. We are celebrating our 7th Annual Bunko Tournament on Saturday, June 27, and think it would be fun to give you a glimpse of what happens behind the scenes.
Brooke Stonehouse (14), daughter of co-founder Sue Stonehouse gives us a peek inside of what it is like to live Rolling For Pink.
JC: What did you think when your mom talked about a Bunko Tournament to raise money for Breast Cancer? In your wildest dreams, did you think it would be this big?
BS: Well, it started with a great idea to raise money for breast cancer, but did I honestly think that a Bunko Tournament was going to get so big? No! I hadn’t even heard about bunko and didn’t really think anyone else had. I still had a lot of faith in my mom because when she has an idea she never really lets it go until she makes sure she gets the job done. When the idea of a bunko tournament started, it slowly started coming
together, especially after my aunt was diagnosed with breast cancer. If you asked me today, after seeing everything not only my mom does, but everyone else that comes into this community to help raise money, it would be a definite yes!
JC: You probably don’t remember your mom leaving at night to play bunko? We play bunko when our kids are babies so we can get out of the house. All moms play it. We can chat, eat, drink and maybe win some money!
JC: What is the craziest thing you have watched your mom do for RFP?
BS: The craziest thing I have watched my mom do for RFP is not something crazy or weird. It’s that she can still do RFP while doing 100 other things at the same time. Although I do have a pretty crazy Mom!
JC: Yes, your mom is the craziest, most loyal person I know. She will drop everything or add more to her already full plate just to help a friend. What is the craziest thing she has asked you to do for RFP?
BS: The craziest thing she has ever made me do is probably selling the raffle tickets. It’s not that crazy, it’s really fun, but we like to try and sing and make them laugh so the women/men want to buy raffle tickets from us.
JC: You are definitely a team player! Does the number of women that have breast cancer surprise you? What about the numbers of people that survive because of the money you have helped to raise?
BS: I am definitely surprised to think that a lot of people get breast cancer, mainly women. You know that a lot of people have breast cancer, when you ask someone about it, almost everyone knows at least one person that has breast cancer. I think that what RFP is doing is amazing. The fact that we can raise money to try and save peoples lives is absolutely amazing. This is why Rolling For Pink has grown so much.
JC: Let’s say it is 3 days before the event. What would you be doing to help get everything ready?
BS: Well, to get ready for the event it’s usually lining up these long rows of bags and putting each little gift or item that someone has donated into the bags. Or we usually help setup the tents and make sure that all the plaques with the pictures are set up correctly for the silent auction. We also set up tables and put on tablecloths. Another thing we do to get ready is clean up and I have to say that is not the most fun. Once we see what it is all for, it’s worth it.
JC: If you could pick something to have in the auction what would it be? If we get it we will make your mom bid on it!
BS: SOCCER! I love to play soccer and would love VIP tickets to a game or something fun for my family to enjoy after June 27.
JC: We call those bags “swag” bags and they are the highlight of the event. Thank you for filling them. Agree, you do get lost in a sea of bags. What would you love to put in the SWAG bags that people would love and haven’t seen before?
BS: Shave It! I heard them on your show and think they should give us free Shave It! We love Shave It!
JC: Last question, RFP is your family’s passion. If you could tell someone else to raise awareness for a cause what organization would that be?
BS: Probably, disabled children. I don’t think there are enough charities to help them or actually make them feel good about themselves. I would also want an organization to teach regular kids that even if they look different or act different they are still normal human beings. They deserve to be treated exactly like everyone else.
JC: You are an amazing young lady Brooke. I know you are headed off to high school in the fall and we at The Kim Pagano Show wish you much success in the future. I have a feeling this isn’t the last time we will be hearing from you.
Registration is open! Log on today to reserve your spot at the 7th annual Bunko Tournament. Everyone is sure to have a blast!
