Many Hands Make Little Work

August 24, 2016

Giving to someone else can be your best medicine. There are so many ways to give back. Money isn’t the only way to support your community. You can donate your time and expertise as well. The important thing is to find the best way to incorporate charity into your life.
Since I have been doing my radio show, I have learned about so many amazing and worthwhile foundations, from organizations helping seniors and children, all our men and women who have served our country and wounded warriors, to serving the homeless and anyone going through recovery, or dealing with cancer, including our furry friends. Helping others will really warm your heart, especially when you see how much your care is needed and appreciated.
If you have gently worn clothes that you no longer want or your children have outgrown, there’s another home waiting for them. As my parents always said, one person’s trash is someone else’s treasure. Let’s think of ways to be helpful in giving our time or God-given gifts to benefit others. Some of us might be wondering, how can I help anyone else when I’m just getting by myself? I believe whatever help you give to others comes back tenfold. Give and you shall be given, although that is not the reason to give, as giving should come from your heart, unconditionally.
If you’re trying to figure out how to give, start with your time. What would be helpful if you needed help? In my eyes, there are so many ways to give back. You can also look at what you’re passionate about and then look for ways you can help in that capacity. Usually the thing that comes easiest to you is probably your gift. You know, the thing you do without any thought, that people compliment you on, and that you love doing.
For example, if you like animals, you might want to help out at a shelter or rescue foundation. If you are a teacher or love children, consider finding ways to help foster or young children who might have special needs, or mothers with more than one child. If you are passionate about seniors, they just might need someone to listen and spend time with them, and you’ll enjoy hearing their loving stories. I think of it as their jewels of life.
In today’s world, food banks for people going through hard times always appreciate assistance with feeding hungry people. Maybe pick up a couple of extra groceries to share. Or your overabundance of cars, furniture, toys, computers, food, bedding, dishes, or stuff in just about any category would be greatly appreciated by several organizations that accept donations.
When you start your day with your gratitude list, take a moment to see how you can share some of your life jewels with people who might not be so fortunate. In this busy world, remember that many hands make little work.
